Craig Roberts declares victory over Tootie Smith in Clackamas County election

Former Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts has a large lead over Clackamas County Board of Commissioners Chair Tootie Smith in a runoff election for the county board chair seat, according to the latest returns released Friday, Nov. 8.

Roberts had garnered 57% of the vote while Smith had accumulated 43%. 184,725 votes have been tallied so far.

In separate statements made following the latest vote tally update, Roberts essentially declared victory while Smith held off on any comments on the results.

“It’s a Win! I am deeply honored by the confidence Clackamas County voters have shown in our mission to restore integrity, accountability, and financial responsibility to the office of County Chair. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves, work with others to address our challenges, protect what makes Clackamas County such an incredible place to live and work, and lead with transparency, respect, and honesty. Thank you to my supporters, my campaign team, my family, and, most of all, the voters of Clackamas County for making this victory possible,” Roberts wrote on his campaign Facebook page.

“I would like to thank the people of Clackamas County who voted in this election. As the county continues to receive ballots, it is important that each vote is tabulated. In honoring every vote, I will wait further announcements,” Smith wrote via email.

Smith has served on the board of commissioners for eight years while Roberts was the county sheriff for 15 years before retiring in 2020.

Roberts garnered more votes than Smith in the initial May election, but not enough to avoid a runoff.
